Meditations
meditations
(a series)
ink on paper
summer 2023
“Ling’s new artist’s books, Human Evolution and The Ballades, are cheerfully desolate meditations on sex, emotion, and state sponsored abstraction, Chopin and data entry, the elusive nature of ink, and possibilities for an expressive Risography that employs no pretty colors whatsoever.”
— Will Fowler, painter
a new expansion of works, collectively titled meditations, continue ideas of elusive text and meaning. specifically, the idea of untranslatable language. or perhaps, a certain codex of hieroglyphics that the artist/reader is merely fluent in, but yet, does not comprehend. similar works have appeared throughout history — beginning in the 15th century with the still undeciphered Voynich Manuscript, the puzzling 1981 Codex Seraphinianus, and more recent to my own generation, the Liber Primus released by the unconfirmed deep-internet intelligence organization Cicada 3301. these works blend characters and images into a surreal, dream-like textual tapestry whose purpose and meaning evade literal translation, and possibly meaning all together.
meditations returns to simplicity and binaries. black & white. ink on paper. shape and line. reminiscence of rorschach tests. mind manifesting. there is no answer. we do not yet understand.
