“ Lamentable Virgo. The overthinker. The perfectionist. The Virgin. Bring me the thoughts of Virgo. Maybe together they will shine bright. ”
— KING OF ALL COSMOS
How often do you think about the way you think? Is a friend human or is a human a friend? How big is the universe?
This existential crisis takes inspiration from PlayStation 2’s early 2000s video game, Katamari Damacy, in which the player acts as a 3D sphere sent to collect — literally roll up — objects in a cityscape world. In Japanese, Katamari / 塊 means “mass,” and the whole point of the game is to just keep growing your “Katamari” ball as big as possible, all for the sake of satisfying the King of All Cosmos. This overarching “boss” figure jerkishly and insultingly sends you off to roll up specific objects to suit his delights. Mythology, horoscopes, and astronomy inform the basis for the King’s missions. As such, I used my own horoscope, Virgo, as my inspiration for this project. Always the perfectionist, always outwardly too rational, and always stuck in our heads, it’s no wonder why our sign is the virgin…
